Cardio Versus Strength Training
May 10, 2008

Can any one tell about their experience with

Cardio Versus Strength Training?

My friend is training me doing strength training.  I need to lose about 25 - 30 lbs.  Can I achieve this doing strength training?  I go for an hour with 15 - 30 sec rest, working upper and lower body.  Lots of squats.

I have read somewhere that integrating cardio workouts with weights does help, however, I am a firm believer in the HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) way of doing cardio, it benefits everyone and works on an individual basis. When running/biking and doing any kind of aerobic exercise you can work at your own level and are not really pushing yourself to the max, by doing HIIT traning you are working your heart rate faster therefore burning more calories in less time, you only need to do 25 minutes of HIIT on your cardio days, this will burn 4 times more fat than you do on normal cardio workout. It does not matter how fit you are because you have to run as fast as you can when sprinting, there are various different methods, I do 10 straight laps of my football field 4 times over with 1 minutes rest in between each set. I sprint the first lap then jog back, sprint then jog etc 5 times, 4 times over. It is quite hard but you are not able to get a pattern as you would when jogging or biking etc as you are not working at a single pattern also by doing HIIT you are hitting your fat levels almost straight away and because its such a short time you are not eating into your muscle tissue.

I agree with Jim but I take it a little further. Your main goal being weight loss then you want to ensure that you keep your heart rate up through out the entire workout. I accomplish this by throwing in a quick 30 seconds of cardio style movements in between each set on work out days. For example, I start by jumping rope (or stair stepping, basically pick you "favorite" cardio exercise) for 40 - 60 seconds then immediately go to Bench Press, do one set, then back to the jump rope for another 20 - 60 seconds (depending on heart rate) and continue in that manner until done. I have found it is a great way to "sneak" in cardio without having long drawn out battles with treadmills.

This method along with diet will obliterate fat and still leave muscle mass intact and growing.

Doing strength training long side with cardio is more effective for long term weight loss than doing either of them alone. Adding strength training to your routine will build muscle, and help you burn more calories.
